Cowboys and Indians

It's been a long week and I am so happy it's finally Friday! I got to meet a true New Mexico (grew up hearding cattle on a ranch in Taos) cowboy through my job earlier in the week and boy was he a gentleman. He even took his hat off to shake my hand! I like to think that I don't care so much about chivalry but, honestly, it makes me melt a little inside every time a guy buys me flowers, opens a car door for me, pulls out a chair...those little things really do matter.

The cowboy's mom is being awarded at our annual dinner and we were videotaping him talking about his childhood growing up with her. Something that I found particularly interesting is that his mom gives out medicine bags to people. I had never heard of a medicine bag before. It's a Native American tradition to give these to a person in order to help them in some way - give them guidance, help them find love, speed up healing, whatever it may be that they're seeking. It sounded like the bag may contain a spirit animal of some kind that gives you power. She gave one to an engineer that had a beaver in it as an example as they are natures engineers. Pretty fascinating. In a world where people take pills for every ailment and rely on technology - blogs for instance ; ) - to communicate, I find it comforting that there are still traditions like this surviving. And chivalry still exists.

  1. Ah yes I agree, I didn't think I cared about that stuff either but when Riley does those little things, or any guy, it really is nice to know it still excists.

The medcine bag is so interesting and it sounds like you have an interesting job too, what kind of work do you do?

  2. I work for Leadership New Mexico as Program and Marketing Director. I just started a few months ago and I really like it so far! It's a non-profit that educates leaders on issues going on in NM and tries to instigate change for the better. That's my short summary of course but my job is basically event planning.
